On 18 November 1935, British Army Lieutenant Colonel Conrad Reginald Cooke reached the summit of Kabru North (7,338 m) for the first time, climbing solo and without the use of oxygen. This ascent remained in the record books until 1953 as the highest altitude ever reached by a solo climber.
